Food Poisoning and Infectious Disease Control
If you think that you have got food poisoning you should contact your local Environmental Services Department, your GP and if you are a food handler or work with young children or vulnerable people you should tell your manager at work.
To prove if food poisoning has made you ill a stool sample will need to be submitted and a questionnaire will need to be filled in by the person who has been ill.
If food poisoning can be related directly to a food source an investigation will be undertaken as necessary
You will be required to take 48 hours off work after being symptom free (after the first normal stool) if you are a food handler, work or attend nursery, work with the young, sick or elderly.
If a sample of the suspected food is still available it should be kept in the refrigerator below 8oC and handed to a member of the Environmental Health Food team as soon as is practicable.
More information on food poisoning can be found on the Health protection Agency Website and form NHS Direct
