Animal Welfare

The Council issues licenses for the following:

  • Animal Boarding Establishments
  • Dangerous Wild Animals
  • Dog Breeding
  • Pet Shops
  • Riding Establishments

This includes the enforcement of animal welfare within these establishments.

Derbyshire Trading Standards Service is responsible for the enforcement of animal health and welfare law dealing mainly with cattle, pigs, sheep and goats.

You can contact an Animal Health Officer for advice on animal health matters or to make a complaint if you believe that an animal health problem exists.

Dangerous Animals

In the UK it is against the law to keep certain types of dogs. these are:-

  • The Pit Bull Terrier
  • The Japanese Tosa
  • The Dogo Argentino
  • The Fila Brasileiro

These are controlled under the The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and the The Dangerous Dogs (Amendment) Act 1997. Please click the Defra link for more information. The police are the enforcement authority for dangerous dogs.

Anyone wishing to keep other dangerous animal will need to obtain a licence to do so.
