Partnership pays off in A38 clear up

A major litter pick is to take place along the entire stretch of the A38 in Amber Valley from tomorrow.

Specially trained Council operatives will carry out a clear up in partnership with teams from Highways Agency contractors Aone+ who are closing the road anyway to cut the grass on the verges and the central reservation. Normally, the Council would have to pay thousands to close the lanes to do such work but instead we're taking advantage of the lane closures by litter picking alongside the contractors between Little Eaton and Alfreton on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 10th August - Little Eaton to Coxbench
  • Thursday 11th August - Coxbench to Hill Top farm
  • Friday 12th August - Hill Top Farm to A610 Ripley
  • Monday 15th August - A610 Ripley to A61 Alfreton
  • Tuesday 16th August - A61 Alfreton to AVBC boundary

Cabinet Member for Green and Thriving Places to Live portfolio, Councillor Jack Brown MBE said: " This is a perfect example of partnership working with Aone+ which has provided us with a tremendous opportunity for lane closures which ordinarily would have cost £11,500 (£2,300 per night).  Having to collect litter on a major roadway can be dangerous work, which is why we have specially trained operatives, working with the restrictions imposed, and  I applaud those taking part in the operation in which we expect to collect an enormous amount of litter.

"We also use this operation as a reminder to motorists that littering not only creates a danger, it's a dirty and anti social habit which is also an offence and can result in a fixed penalty fine or even prosecution for those caught in the act. Please respect our roads and keep litter in your vehicle."

Please report those who deliberately drop litter to Amber Valley Borough Council's Customer and Neighbourhoods Unit on 01773 841335.
