There’s no need to ‘Save Ripley Town Hall! ’

The Council agreed to continue negotiations with Ripley Town Council for a 99 year lease at a peppercorn rent of Ripley Town Hall, with effect from1 April 2013. The final terms will need to be approved by the Council.

The Town Council had offered a capital sum for the Town Hall, but the Council decided to waive this to avoid Ripley taxpayers paying more.

If the lease goes ahead it will  continue to serve the public as a Town Centre Office, Registrar's Office and Police Office. Council meetings and wedding would take place as normal and the public would continue to have access to the Ripley Heritage displays.

An application is also being considered By English Heritage to List the building.

Councillor Stuart Bradford Leader of the Council said: "This is a win-win situation for Ripley. The Town Hall and the use by Ripley Town Council have never been at risk. The Council 'saved' it when it invested millions of pound in the building the Central Headquarters and refurbishing the Town Hall. The people of Ripley can have the benefit of that without having to pay the capital sum, and they can be re-assured about the future of the Town Hall, which can remain open to the public in the same way it does today."

Discussions about the future of the adjoining Council Headquarters are still ongoing with Derbyshire County Council and no decision has yet been made.
