Office workers, refuse collectors and drivers working for the
Council's waste and recycling contractors are to down their normal
tools for a day to help clean the streets of litter and dog mess
throughout the borough.
30 staff from Veolia Environmental Services, at their Ambergate
depot, have teamed up with the Council's neighbourhood wardens to
tackle fly tipping hotspots throughout Amber Valley over the next
two weeks.
Last year, they helped out in charity shops. This year, they're
volunteering in teams to offer a day of the company's time to work
with the Council, clearing litter and dog mess from streets, open
spaces, footpaths and parks in Amber Valley.
Contractors will be working in ten areas including Langley Mill,
Riddings and Heanor Belper, Duffield and Codnor, alongside the
Council's neighbourhood wardens, who have the power to issue fixed
penalty notices to anyone seen fly tipping.
Steve Blizzard, Contract Manager for Veolia in Amber Valley
said: "Social responsibility in the community is part of the
company's ethos and it helps our office staff, who may not know the
areas so well, to get an appreciation of different areas and their
challenges. I also wish to stress that normal bin services won't be
affected."
The clear up started on July 31 for two weeks and will take in
the following locations.
- Riddings Park
- Nottingham Lane Riddings
- Cromford Road Langley Mill
- Wirksworth Road Duffield
- Lacyfields Langley Mill
- Codnor Gate Footpath Codnor Gate
- Back of LIDL Langley Mill
- Hammersmith Butterley Lane
- Back of Morrisons Belper
- Service Road on Coates Park Somercotes
Councillor Liz Bowley, Cabinet Member for Green and Thriving
Places to Live said: "The Council is committed to maintaining clean
streets and open spaces but it remains a challenge to keep on top
of - especially during the school holidays! I wish to thank our
colleagues at Veolia who already do great job on the bins for
collecting rubbish of a different kind and giving up their time for
the community".
