Council reflects on a year’s achievements

At the first Full Council meeting of the year Amber Valley Borough Councillors were presented with a list of Key Achievements recorded by the Council during 2014.

The lengthy list featured achievements which have contributed to the Council’s aim of ‘A Prosperous and Healthy Amber Valley’, and included:-

  • A commitment to the concept of a Derby and Derbyshire Combined Authority, allowing councils to work more closely together.
  • The introduction of the successful Ripley Parking Payback Scheme to help make shopping in the town more affordable
  • Agreement to extend free parking in the Council’s car parks for residents, from April 2015.
  • Continued support for Heanor Community Shop Project
  • Helping individuals and households who were struggling to pay their heating bills, get support from energy companies
  • Won a national award for bringing empty homes back into use
  • Increased funding for disabled adaptations
  • Injected extra cash into the most deprived areas of the Borough through a Councillors’ Community Fund
  • Heanor’s William Gregg VC Leisure Centre named the UK’s ‘Leisure Centre of the Year’
  • Being part of the team that helped land Belper the title of ‘Britain’s Best High Street’
  • Supported improvements to floodlighting at Heanor Town’s Town Ground with a £5,000 grant
  • Purchased new pool steps to enhance disabled access to the swimming pool at Belper Leisure Centre
  • Successfully prosecuted local food establishments which failed to meet food safety standards
  • Prosecuted a local resident whose benefit fraud had seen her swindle more than £26,000
  • Replaced vehicle fleet and saved money
  • Received national recognition for the recycling service
  • Saw seven parks and open spaces receive prestigious Green Flag Awards
  • Launched a new ‘splash pad’ water feature at Crossley Park, Ripley
  • Introduced a successful new approach to town centre clean-ups
  • Prosecuted a number of people for fly-tipping and fly-posting.
