Holocaust Memorial Day

Amber Valley Borough Council commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day 2015 by planting a Plane tree in Somercotes Recreation Ground.  The Worshipful the Mayor and Mayoress of the Borough of Amber Valley, Councillor John Walker and Mrs Angela Walker, attended the ceremony, with Councillor Walker conducting the short ceremony and planting the tree.  A minute’s silence was held to remember the victims of Genocide.

The theme for the 2015 Holocaust Memorial Day was ‘Keep the Memory Alive’ and the Council thought that planting a tree was an appropriate way in which to reflect that theme.

Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated on 27 January each year and is an opportunity to remember the victims of the Holocaust and all subsequent Genocides.  This year marked the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, making it a particularly poignant day. This year is also the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia.

Councillor Walker said: “It is vital that we remember the victims of the Holocaust and all other Genocides that have occurred, in order to honour their memory but also to seek to learn lessons from the past to ensure a more tolerant future.”

Employees of the Council also commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day by lighting a virtual candle on the Council’s website and taking the opportunity for quiet reflection.
