Alfreton-based Amber Fest - a great day of discovery

This year’s Amber Fest, organised by Amber Valley Borough Council, and based in Alfreton town centre on Friday 20 May, proved a real hit with residents looking to discover more about the local area.

The public was invited to take time out from their shopping to speak to officers from the Borough Council about their services, and chat about areas of concern with organisations working to improve the Borough.

The free event also featured Alfreton Town Council who were able to highlight a number of neighbourhood initiatives along with the Amber Community First Responders who showcased their valuable work to deliver rapid medical assistance in association with East Midlands Ambulance Service.

Also taking part were Groundwork, who took the opportunity to encourage people to enjoy the local nature reserves and green spaces and consider volunteering opportunities. Derbyshire Libraries were on hand to promote their 24-hour Library and Derbyshire’s new Police and Crime Commissioner, Hardyal Dhindsa, also called in.

Visitors were entertained by Essentially Brass, Vivo! String Quartet and acoustic music by Sunflower Thieves, as they browsed the stalls.

The event coincided with ‘Love Your Local Market’ showcasing the variety of stalls on the Alfreton Indoor Market which feature quality wares, special deals and activities.

Amber Valley Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Cllr Kevin Buttery commented: “AmberFest proved a very good way of bringing together some of the groups and organisations responsible for making the area such a great place to live and work. I was very pleased that a good number of visitors took the opportunity to learn more about some of the services and facilities on their doorstep.”

‘Love Your Local Market’ continues throughout the month of May with traditional outdoor markets in Ripley and Heanor on Fridays and Saturdays plus Monday in Heanor. Alfreton Indoor Market opens Tues, Thurs, Friday and Saturday.
