Council’s Belper Jobs Fair hailed a great success

A Belper Jobs Fair, organised and facilitated by Amber Valley Borough Council, following the closure of local employer Courtaulds, has been hailed a great success.

In total, 277 people visited the Herbert Strutt Centre on 9 June to take the opportunity to meet and discuss potential new jobs with the 31 employers who were present. They were also able to read 40 newsflashes of vacancies in the locality that officers from the Department for Work and Pensions had brought. There were over 300 jobs on offer, including retail, manufacturing, and the care industry.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Kevin Buttery, said: "The job losses at Courtaulds are not only devastating for the individual employees but will also have a significant impact on the local economy, especially with the additional closure of ABRU. The Council, along with its many partners, including the County Council and the Department for Work and Pensions was determined to help people get back into employment, and is extremely grateful to the employers who attended with jobs to offer; they clearly value the experience and skills of the local people."

Cllr Buttery continued: "There was a positive atmosphere, with quite a few employees already finding jobs, or with the prospect of quickly returning to work. From speaking with people on the day they found it extremely useful and it was so pleasing to receive the appreciation of employers, trade union representatives and attendees."

The Council has arranged further 'support events' to be held at the Strutt Centre, 9.30am - 12pm every Thursday for the next 4 weeks. These will give employees the opportunity to catch up with each other and provide mutual motivation and support. Citizens Advice will also be on hand to offer guidance.

Regarding the news about further job losses at ABRU, Cllr Buttery said: "I am looking at meeting with the owners/management to establish what's happening and how we can assist staff and the business in anyway.”
