Free support to get active and healthy

An innovative new scheme to help more Ripley-area people towards a healthy lifestyle – with one-to-one support – has been launched by Amber Valley Borough Council.

Community Movers offers support to people who may be struggling to begin an exercise programme and guides them through a simple step-by-step programme towards a more active and healthy lifestyle.

The Council is working with Derbyshire Sport to deliver the project which is funded by Derbyshire County Council, through the Physical Inactivity Fund.

The Scheme will be particularly looking to help those people who may be posing a risk to their health through their inactivity. Community Movers is open to those over 16 who live in or around Ripley and are currently achieving less than the recommended physical activity guidelines of 150 minutes per week.

The programme starts with an informal one-to-one chat with a project officer and simple assessment. A personal lifestyle plan will then be developed, based on the individual’s needs and goals. Achievements will then be tracked through an activity diary and ongoing contact with the project officer.

Some of the benefits Community Movers looks to offer participants include…

  • Control your weight
  • Reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes
  • Reduce your risk of some cancers
  • Improve your mental health and mood
  • Improve your ability to do daily activities and prevent the risk of falling
  • Better self confidence
  • More energy
  • Make new friends

Commented Housing and Public Health Portfolio Holder, Cllr David Taylor: “This is an excellent scheme and we are very pleased to be able to offer this kind of support to local people wishing to improve their quality of life. We are hoping there will be a strong take-up.”
