Council welcomes reversal of waste charges decision

Amber Valley Borough Council has welcomed the newly elected County Council’s decision to scrap the charges for people taking building and demolition waste to the nine household waste recycling centres across Derbyshire. The charges, which started on 3 April this year, had been introduced by the previous administration.

The Council had been concerned that the new charges for disposing of concrete, mortar, rubble, hardcore and ceramics waste would lead to an increase in fly tipping, which it would then have to deal with at the cost of local Council Tax payers.

Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Chris Short, said: “Amber Valley is one of the most attractive places to live and work in Derbyshire and the Borough Council, working with its local communities, helps to achieve this by keeping the streets clean and maintaining high quality parks and open spaces. Fly tipping is a significant blight on local environments, a source of pollution, a potential danger to public health and is hazardous to wildlife. The Council spends thousands of pounds each year cleaning up after fly-tipping incidents; last year we had to deal with over 550 cases. The charges could have discouraged people from disposing of waste correctly and so we welcome their removal.”
