New Life-Saving Equipment at Alfreton House

Places for People Leisure, the company who manage the Alfreton, Ripley and William Gregg VC Leisure Centres on behalf of Amber Valley Borough Council, have donated a defibrillator to Alfreton Town Council. The machine has been sited at Alfreton House on the Town’s High Street.

Peter Sharkey, General Manager, explained: “We’ve raised the money to buy this machine thanks to the generosity of our customers who have kindly contributed to the various fundraising efforts of our staff.

“We took up the fund-raising challenge after one of our members, Michael Conway, suffered a serious heart attack. Using our defibrillator helped him, and so staff from our three centres decided to raise the funds needed to provide a defibrillator for wider public use.”

Michael suffered his heart attack whilst at Alfreton Leisure Centre. He required hospitalization and counts himself as very fortunate.

He said: “I was very lucky as when I was taken ill, the staff at the Leisure Centre were well-trained and knew exactly what to do to provide the immediate life-saving treatment. I’m happy that this new defibrillator means that the town will also be able to offer similar life-saving capability should a member of the public suffer from a cardiac arrest.”

Councillor John Walker, the Alfreton Town Mayor, received the life-saving equipment, on behalf of the Town Council, for use in the town.
