Smoking fine for Codnor bookmaker

The owner of a Codnor bookmakers has been fined after Amber Valley Borough Council licensing enforcement officers found people smoking on the premises.

A case against Ian Douglas, owner of DD Racing, was brought under the Single Justice Procedure, which enables certain cases to be dealt with by a single magistrate sitting with a legal adviser, without the attendance of either a prosecutor or the defendant. He was charged with smoking on the premises and allowing others to smoke.

Douglas was fined £76.00 for both offences, with a victim surcharge of £30.00 and ordered to pay £212.00 costs - a total of £318.00.

The Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing and Public Health, Cllr David Taylor, commented: “Legislation regarding smoking in public places has made a very positive impact and we will always act to enforce the law.”

The Public Health Act 2006 made it an offence to smoke in public places, workplaces and public transport, including taxis. 99% of businesses comply with the legislation. If you have any concerns please contact Amber Valley Borough Council on 01773 570222.
