Freedom of the Borough

The Council has awarded the Freedom of the Borough on six occasions:

Ellen Patricia MacArthur — 11 April 2001

Dame Ellen Patricia MacArthur (born 8 July 1976), DBE, is a retired British sailor, from Whatstandwell near Matlock in Derbyshire. MacArthur was a successful solo long-distance yachtswoman. On 7 February 2005 she broke the world record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe, a feat which gained her international renown.

Ross Davenport — 11 April 2007

Ross Paul Davenport (born 23 May 1984) is a British swimmer. He won two gold medals in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne for the 200 m freestyle and the 4×200 m freestyle relay. He started at Belper school in 1995.

Miles Hilton-Barber — 31 October 2007

Miles Hilton-Barber, of Duffield in Derbyshire, is a British adventurer who, despite being blind, undertakes a variety of expeditions all around the world to raise awareness and money for a charity organisation, and blind people in general. His recent trips include flying from London to Sydney in a micro-light, climbing Mont Blanc and running across the Gobi Desert.

The Mercian Regiment — 26 January 2010

In February 2010 the Mercian Regiment was granted the Freedom of the Borough of Amber Valley in recognition of the regiment’s long association with the Borough and to honour the many residents from Amber Valley who have served and continue to serve the regiment.

Philip Hogg — 11 December 2013

Local sportsman Phil Hogg’s disability sporting career began following a serious cycling accident in 1991. He initially took part in wheelchair basketball and became a GB regular. His Paratriathlon career is relatively new but he has already won gold at the European Championships and the British Championships. Phil claimed fourth spot in the recent World Championships posting the fastest ever by a British Tri athlete.

David Ellis — 11 December 2013

Local sportsman Dave Ellis moved into Paratriathlon via swimming where he was a multiple gold medal winner. Shortly after the switch to Paratriathalon he also claimed a gold medal in the Tri6B category for visually-impaired athletes at the European and British Championships earlier this summer and has now claimed Gold in the ITU World Paratriathalon Championships held in London.
