Squirrels

The Council do not offer a service to treat for Squirrels

  • If you have Squirrels in your house, the Pest Operative can ring you to give you advice and in extreme circumstances would visit your property to assess the extent of the problem.
  • We will not provide traps as cage traps need to be checked at least twice every 24 hours.

General Information

  • Can enter roof spaces of houses and other buildings by climbing walls or jumping from nearby trees.
  • Can chew woodwork and ceilings, strip insulation from electrical wiring, tear up fibre glass insulation and sometimes drown in cold water storage tanks.
  • Treatment is restricted by legislation i.e. captive grey squirrels must not be released or allowed to escape into the wild.
  • Warfarin poison may be used against squirrels indoors in roof spaces.

Prevention

  • Proofing to prevent access to property.
  • Block gaps and entrance holes with tightly wedged wire netting.

Advice to Customers

  • Contact private pest contractor (yellow pages)
  • The Pest Officer could ring you to offer advice but would not visit.
