Amber Valley Borough Council is a Waste Collection Authority,
and is responsible for providing a household waste collection
service for its residents.
In accordance with the Environmental Protection Act (1990),
every Local Authority in the UK is permitted to introduce schemes
to encourage recycling and reduce waste being sent to landfill.
Amber Valley residents have their waste and recycling collected
on alternate weeks, meaning that on one week your
wheeled refuse bin will be emptied or purple bags collected
and on the following week, all your recycling will be collected
from your recycling boxes and bags.
The collection scheme introduced by Amber Valley Borough Council
in 2005, has had a significant impact on the annual recycling
rate. The 2010/2011 figure for recycling, re-use and
composting in Amber Valley was 26.9%
Recycling Matters
We all need to do our bit to make a difference, are you
doing yours? For further information on recycling and how you
can Reduce, Re-use and Recycle your waste click here.
Household Recycling Collection
Every household (where possible), will be issued with two
recycling boxes and two bags for recycling i.e.
- Orange box: for tins, cans and foil
- Yellow box: for glass bottles and jars
- Blue bag: for paper
- Orange bag: for all types of card including yellow pages
telephone directories
Please note that due to limited space on the recycling
vehicle, only one full bag of cardboard will be
collected.
If you have additional paper, tins, cans or
glass, please place this out in boxes
(equivalent size to the boxes/bags issued by the Council) or
carrier bags. (Please do not
use refuse bags/bin liners, as these will not be
collected)
If you regularly produce a lot of these recyclable materials
(card not included) and need extra boxes or
require new or replacement recycling boxes and bags please
contact the refuse team on 01773 841326.

Household Refuse Collection
The majority of properties in Amber
Valley are issued with a standard 240ltr or 140ltr green wheeled
bin for their refuse. For those properties that are unable to have
a wheeled refuse bin due to property locations or
bin collection problems, will be issued with
purple refuse bags instead.
Any property issued with purple
refuse bags, may have a wheeled bin to store the bags in if
required, but must place the bags out for collection on their
scheduled collection day.

Communal Collections
There is a different collection system in place for properties
with communal bins. Residents who live in flats or
residential complexes are often provided with larger 1100ltr or
660ltr wheeled refuse bins, that they share, as well as 240 or
140ltr wheeled bins for recycling. Collection of these bins
will take place as listed on the refuse and recycling calendar,
all bins will be collected and returned from and
to the bin compounds by the Waste Collection
Operatives.
