Derbyshire County Council's Social Services department delivers support for carers mainly as a community care provision for the cared for person, i.e. short break care in the person's own home or in a residential setting. Day care also provides the carer with a break from caring. In many instances home care staff provide personal care to reduce the amount of times in the week the carer has to undertake these tasks. In such circumstances the emphasis is on giving carers breaks from caring.

The Carers and Disabled Children Act allows Local Authorities to provide services directly to carers as well as to the cared for person. It also allows us to help carers even where the person cared for refuses assessment or services. The Carers (Equal Opportunities) Act requires local Authorities when carrying out a carers assessment to consider the carer's need for employment, education, training or leisure.

Following a comprehensive assessment a carer could be offered any service that helps them to go on caring. Examples of this could be some domestic help, help with gardening or training or counselling. Specialist services for young carers can also be made available.

Carers may also be eligible for benefits, the Derbyshire County Council Welfare Rights office will be able to provide further information.

Contact your local Social Services Office to find out further information on becoming or needing a carer.
