When is it open?

The park has open access and is available to the public 365 days a year.

Somercotes evolved during the 19th century due to the growth of local industries such as coal mining and the ironworks which brought many people to the area wanting to live close to sources of work.

It is thought that from this growth the demand for outdoor activities grew and playing pitches were developed creating Somercotes Park, and as the population grew, facilities were added as time went on.

More recently the Somercotes Leisure Development Group, A voluntary community group applied for funding from the Big Lottery Fund, Coalfield Regeneration Fund and Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership to build the Somerlea Centre, which is a community hub in the centre of the park.

Somerlea Centre – the main hub of the recreation ground offering toilet facilities, meeting, training and changing rooms and indoor gym. A large function room is available for hire with bar facilities.

Car parking - available adjacent to the Somerlea Centre and is free of charge.

Multi-User Games Area (MUGA) - which is free to use and has lighting for the darker nights.

Synthetic Pitch – this is available for use at a small cost and can be booked through the Somerlea Centre.

Play Area – equipped play area containing traditional items such as swings, slides and there is also a new zip-wire facility.

Gym Equipment - outdoor gym equipment is available which is well used by local teenagers.

Skate Park – made from skatelight boards with traditional ramps.

Bowling Green – used by a local team from Jacksdale.

Football pitch – this is managed by the Somerlea Centre and is available for a small fee.
