Memories of Ripley to be published

30 October 2006

Members of the public are being invited to contribute memories to a book about Ripley’s past.

The book, which is being compiled by the Timelines Project, will explore aspects of Ripley’s past including:

  • the old railway;
  • the town’s mining heritage;
  • the town’s businesses; and
  • the Ropewalk footpath, which gets its name from the nineteenth century rope-making business that operated in the area.

On Thursday 16 November and Thursday 30 November,members of the public will be able to visit Ripley Library to share their memories. Artist Trish O’Shea and Neo Heny from the Timelines Project will be recording people’s stories between 10am and 4.30pm on both days.

Neo Heny said: “Please share your stories with us. We are also interested in any photographs or mementoes that could help us to illustrate the town’s story. We are particularly interested in stories of the Ripley Railway and the mining heritage of the town.”

Anyone who would like to contribute to the book but is unable to attend the library sessions should contact Neo Heny on 01773 841529.

The Timelines Project is designed to engage the public in arts activities and introduce artworks along Ripley Greenway, the multi-user path that follows the route of the town’s old railway. The project is being coordinated by Amber Valley Borough Council and Groundwork Derby and Derbyshire. It is funded by Arts Council East Midlands, Amber Valley Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council.
