The Timelines Project is inviting members of the public to light up Ripley Greenway during the 2006 Phoenix Lantern Festival.
The festival parade - led by Mr Fox’s pyrotechnic fire dancers - will make its way along the Greenway on National Tree Dressing Day (Saturday 2 December 2006).
People of all ages are being invited to prepare for the parade by attending one of the free workshops that are taking place at Ripley Mill Hill School in November. The theme for this year’s festival is butterflies and workshop participants will have the opportunity to make the following themed items for the parade:
- decorations for bikes and buggies
There will also be opportunities to learn circus and drumming skills during some workshops.
Details of the workshops are listed below:
Saturday 25 November between 9am and midday
Saturday 25 November between 1pm and 4pm
Sunday 26 November between 9am and midday (including circus skills)
Sunday 26 November between 1pm and 4pm (including drumming skills)
To reserve a place at one of the workshops, telephone Stephanie Stevenson on 01773 841447. Children under the age of eight who wish to attend one of the workshops must be accompanied by an adult.
The lantern procession will begin at 4.15pm on Saturday 2 December with Mr Fox’s pyrotechnic fire dancers leading the procession. People of all ages are invited to join the festival procession as it makes its way from the Nottingham Road bridge end of the Greenway to Lumb Farm Inn in Marehay.
At 4.45pm, Mr Fox’s pyrotechnic fire dancers will be joined by drummers and circus performers for the finale performance. During the finale, seasonal refreshments will be available for purchase. The festival will end at 6.15pm.
A shuttle service is available for members of the public who wish to park at Lumb Farm Inn and be transported to the Nottingham Road bridge for 3.30pm. Anyone wishing to book spaces on the shuttle bus should contact Stephanie Stevenson on 01773 841447 by Wednesday 29 November.
The 2006 Phoenix Festival is the third lantern festival that the Timelines Project has held to celebrate National Tree Dressing Day.
The Timelines project is designed to engage the public in arts activities and introduce artworks along Ripley Greenway, the multi-user path that follows the route of the town’s old Railway.
The project is being coordinated by Amber Valley Borough Council and Groundwork Derby and Derbyshire. It is funded by Arts Council East Midlands, Amber Valley Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council.
