Keeping cemeteries safe

21 November 2006

Members of the public are being invited to watch staff from Amber Valley Borough Council staff carry out some of their annual memorial safety checks.

Safety checks in the six cemeteries owned by the Council will be taking place throughout December, January and February. People who wish to learn about the procedure can attend one of the following sessions when a member of staff will be on hand to talk about what is involved:

  • Belper Cemetery (Matlock Road, Broadholme) - Wednesday 6 December – 10am to midday
  • Heanor Cemetery (Ilkeston Road) - Wednesday 13 December - 10am to midday
  • Ripley Cemetery (Cemetery Lane) – Wednesday 20 December - 10am to midday
  • Alfreton Cemetery (Rodgers Lane) – Wednesday 17 January 2007 - 10am to midday

A timetable of work will be displayed in each cemetery shortly before checks are due to start there. During the inspection period, large memorials that are found to be unsafe will be laid flat. Where possible, traditional lawned memorials that are no more than three foot high will be secured using a temporary support system.

The Council will attempt to contact the owners of memorials that fail the safety checks and notices will be posted in the cemeteries giving details about which memorials have failed the checks. Amber Valley Borough Council owns Belper Cemetery, Alfreton Cemetery, Ripley Cemetery, Marlpool Cemetery, Leabrooks Cemetery and Crosshill Cemetery in Codnor.
