Sports Development team helps partner town

07 November 2006

A sports enthusiast from Amber Valley’s partner town in Poland has received a Community Sports Leadership Award from the Borough Council.

During the week beginning Monday 23 October, Przemek Bielawa from Glogow joined local candidates on a Level One Sports Leader UK course at Loscoe’s Charles Hill Sports Complex.

The course focused on team building, communication skills, fitness safety, first aid, organisational skills and ways of identifying sporting opportunities for the local community.

On the final training day, the group put what they had learnt in to practice by planning and running a sports session for local children.

In order to gain Level One Community Sports Leader status, each sports enthusiast who took part in the training course must now complete ten hours of voluntary service, which can be arranged through the Council’s Sports Development Team.

Every year, Amber Valley Borough Council runs two Level One CSLA courses and around three Level One Sports Leader Award (SLA) courses in partnership with schools, sports clubs, community associations, town councils, parish councils and the Derbyshire Connexions Service.

The CSLA course, which forms part of the Council’s Leadership Development Programme, is open to sports enthusiasts in Amber Valley aged 16 and over. For more information about the course telephone 01773 841428.

Councillor John Nelson, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Sports Development, said: “Przemek played a key role at the 2006 Mini Olympics, which Glogow hosted for its partner towns and I’m sure he will become an excellent sports leader.

“This is just the latest example of how Amber Valley is helping its partner towns with their sports development activities. In October 2003, trainees from Glogow and our Swedish partner town Laholm visited us for sports leadership training and in April last year our staff travelled to Glogow to provide training locally.”
