Youngsters shine in Athletics Final

13 November 2006

Twelve school teams competed in the finals of Amber Valley Borough Council’s Primary School Athletics Competition on Thursday 19 October and Thursday 2 November.

Each team had bounced, run and thrown its way to the final by winning one of the area heats of the competition in September. The finals, which took place at Alfreton Leisure Centre, involved three contests – the Large Schools Final, the Medium-sized Schools Final and the Small Schools Final.

The Large Schools Final saw Swanwick Primary School, Ripley Junior School, Marlpool Primary School and Duffield’s Meadows Primary School competing for the annual shield. In a closely fought competition, Ripley Junior School emerged as the winning school for the first time. Last year’s winning school, the Meadows, took second place, Swanwick Primary came third and Marlpool Junior took fourth place.

Taking the trophy in the Medium-sized Schools Final was Alfreton’s Leys Junior School with last year’s winning school, Breadsall Primary, taking the runner-up slot. St Elizabeth’s Primary School in Belper came third and Denby Free Primary School finished in fourth place.

In the Small Schools Final, Milford Primary School just pipped Crich Carr Primary School in a close competition, with only five points separating the two. Crich Junior School came in at a close third and reigning champions Mapperley Primary School had to settle for fourth place.

Amber Valley Mayor Norman Bull presented trophies to the winning teams.

The competition was supported by volunteer athletes and coaches from Amber Valley Athletic Club and youngsters from the Council’s Entry 2 Employment training scheme.
