Amber Valley Borough Council has signed the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change.
Council Leader Alan Cox said: “By signing the pledge, we have agreed to actively tackle climate change in our area and work with others to reduce emissions country-wide.
“There is strong consensus among the scientific community that the world is warming and that this is at least partly the result of human activities. The scale of the challenge presented by climate change means that all sectors of the community must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and adapt to the changes in climate that will occur. Local government has a crucial role to play and signing the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change shows the Council’s commitment to this important issue.”
Councillor Cox added: “It also makes good economic sense to reduce the use of fossil fuels because there is only a finite supply, which is dwindling rapidly. The Council intends to examine the management of its buildings and vehicles to see whether it can cut emissions. It also aims to help local residents and businesses to see what they can do.”
The Council has produced a Climate Neutral Developments Checklist for developers and other people considering new developments. The document shows how environmentally friendly building practices can reduce harm and risk to the climate.
Councillor Cox added: “Unless everyone is involved, we will not make the necessary changes to protect our environment for future generations. It will become more difficult for developers to secure planning permission unless they demonstrate new thinking and action.”
