Mining heritage explored
24 January 2007
A free exhibition charting the history of Ripley’s mining industry is set to go on display at the Borough Council’s Tourist Information Centre in the town.
As the centrepiece of the exhibition, members of the Ripley Heritage Trust have re-created the ground floor of a typical miner’s home in the early 1930s. The scene features a rag rug, which was a common sight in many homes at the time, and a tin bath by the fireside.
The exhibition also features photos of miners taken in the 1920s.
The exhibition will be on display between Saturday 3 February and Tuesday 27 February. The Tourist Information Centre is situated in the town hall on Ripley Market Place. The centre is normally open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 9.30am and 5.30pm, on Wednesdays between 10am and 5.30pm and on Saturdays between 9.30am and 3pm. On Wednesday 28 February, the centre will close at 4pm instead of 5.30pm.
