The theme of this year’s well dressing is the “tradition and heritage” of Ripley, featuring the development of the town and its many changes over the years, including references to Butterley Engineering, the Oxford Street Zoo, trams, the Market Place, annual Charter Fair, the market and town centre shopping. This theme ties in with other heritage based events that are planned for later this year.
The Blessing Ceremony will take place on Saturday, 9th June, by the fountain on the Market Place. This will be followed by a number of activities featuring the Ashover Training Band and a range of street entertainment, all adding to the celebration.
In the week leading up to this event you will also be able to visit a demonstration of “Well in the Making” (at the Tourist Information Centre in Ripley) and see for yourself the complexity of design and hard work that goes into making every panel. Wooden frames are filled with clay and then a design is etched into the surface. A colourful picture is then produced by using seeds, petals and other natural materials - you will even be able to have a go yourself !
