Tackling Youth Homelessness
22 June 2007
Amber Valley Borough Council has been successful in securing Government funding aimed at tackling youth homelessness. It is one of only 27 local authorities and partnerships to do so.
The Council and Amber Valley Foyer Trust will use the funding on a programme of work for Year 10 pupils in secondary schools within the Borough. The programme aims to inform pupils of the ‘reality’ of homelessness and also to give information about local support agencies and homelessness legislation. Every pupil will be given a resource pack to keep.
Councillor Norman Bull, Cabinet Member for Health, Safety and Housing said, “The Council identified the need in its Young Persons Housing Strategy to work with pupils before they leave school, to examine and discuss some of the issues around homelessness. Working with teenagers to alert them to the causes and possible consequences of leaving home in an unplanned way, will help to prevent many cases of young people finding themselves without suitable accommodation.”
Amber Valley Foyer Trust is a local charitable organisation whose aims are to meet the housing, training and social needs of young people in Amber Valley. The Foyer also runs the Council’s mediation service for young people and their family.
