The Emerge Summer Festival is back bigger and better than before

21 June 2007

To enjoy a fabulous mix of world class performances and fantastic local talent go to Shipley Country Park Visitor Centre on Sunday 8th July between 11 am and 6.30 pm.

Back with a vibrant programme of old favourites and new additions Emerge 07 is a free festival for all the family. There’s a fantastic line up including jazz rhythms from the Helen McDonald Band; haunting Scottish Folk from Lau; Gamelan and exotic South East Asian Dance from Nusantara; vibrant dance and drumming from Tongesayi Gumbo and Khula and British Folk from Pete Castle. New this year is exquisite Chinese Music from Ling Peng and Chinese Whispers and classical Indian Dance from Sonia Sabri.

There’s also Folk, Punk, Rock and Pop from some of our highly talented young local musicians, including James Warner Prophecies, NotSoPretty and NG26 plus dance performances by Folk Friendzy and Trinity. Belper Children’s Choir will be singing too. Come early and catch Maids of the Mill celebrating the great British passion for Dr Who in traditional Morris dance format!

Strange and Wonderful stories from Derbyshire to New Delhi will be told by Debbie Guneratne, Pete Castle and Pete Chand. Deaf children will be able to enjoy mimed and signed stories from Jerry Hanifin with spoken interpretation for hearing children.

Local children and students will be working with some of the professional artists throughout June and July to prepare performances for the event.

Cllr Jean Gemmell, Amber Valley’s representative on Arts Council England’s board of elected members and Deputy Mayor of Amber Valley, said “Our aim is to make the Emerge Festival accessible to everyone. It’s a great event where we can learn about the cultural traditions of others whilst also celebrating our own. The event will showcase world class music and dance performers alongside performances by our own very talented children and young people. Everyone in the family will find something just for them – and it’s Free”

So…..pop in for an hour or stay the whole day… Learn a new talent in some of the many dance and music workshops or bring a picnic, suncream and wellies and just relax on the grass. Join in some great creative activities with your children, such as willow kite making – or just make one by yourself.

Emerge 07 is organised and funded by Amber Valley Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council Countryside Service and Fleet Arts’ Turn It Up Youth Music Project.

Much appreciated additional support for this year’s festival has come from Derbyshire County Council, Amber Valley Housing, Nelson Distribution, Amber Valley Community Safety and Erewash Borough Council.
