DC Leisure raises over £100,000 for charity

04 September 2007

Ripley and Heanor Leisure Centres were two of the 54 DC Leisure sites that participated in Swimathon 2007. DC Leisure has announced that it has raised £109,493 as a result of the charity initiative and was the top fundraising company in the event. This sum of money will be divided between Marie Curie Cancer Care and The Swimathon Foundation.

Diccon Loy, National Pools Manager for Swimathon, comments: “DC Leisure has been a great supporter of Swimathon and has been invaluable in helping us towards our £1.5 million target for Marie Curie. The company committed their entire estate to hosting the event this year and this has made a remarkable difference.”

Mark Haslam, Swimming Group Manager for DC Leisure, says: “We’re delighted to have been the number one fundraising company at this year’s Swimathon, and raising over £100,000 will make a substantial difference to the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity.”

Swimathon proved so successful for DC Leisure in 2006 that the number of centres taking part doubled for this year’s challenge.

Mark continues: “We had 54 centres and over 900 swimmers sign up to Swimathon 2007. We are keen to emphasise the importance of swimming and have spent a lot of time encouraging participation in this sport through special events, programmes and challenges. Swimathon helps us focus on this and makes a contribution to a worthy cause at the same time.”

After the success of this year’s event, Swimathon 2008, the world’s largest swimming fundraiser, will take place between April 17-20. To date it has attracted over 500,000 swimmers and raised over £32 million for the charities.
