Local swimmers represent their country

18 September 2007

Local youngsters are proving they have what it takes to be world champions when it comes to swimming. Emma Smithurst, David Ellis and Olivia Sefton are just three of the ten members of the Derventio Excel Swimming Squad tipped to make the Great Britain Swim Team that is due to be selected in late September 2007.

David Ellis is ranked fourth in the world in four different swim events. Despite being partially sighted he has faced the challenge and trains alongside mainstream swim club members. David has achieved numerous gold medals at national level and is a strong contender for the GB Paralympic team, which will compete in Beijing 2008.

Emma Smithurst, who has just returned from the European Junior Championships, will be joining Olivia Sefton as they head off for the Australian Nationals in December 2007. Between them the young swimmers have achieved multiple national championship medals.

Mark Rose, the Derventio Squad Coach, is also a Head Coach for the GB Team and will be accompanying Emma and Olivia on the End of Year tour to Australia. He explained, “We’re extremely proud of our club members achievements and are looking forward to helping them progress further with the use of the brand new pools that are opening at Alfreton and Ripley Leisure Centres over the next few months. We currently use Ripley Leisure Centre but will be increasing our training programme when Alfreton reopens its 25m, competition standard pool in November.”

Ends.
