Former Amber Valley Mayor Norman Bull raised £2,200 for his two chosen charities during his year in office (2006/7).
Councillor Bull decided to raise money for Derbyshire Association for the Blind and the Paul Strickland Scanner Centre in Middlesex, which treats patients from all over the country. Derbyshire Association for the Blind received £1,250 and the Paul Strickland Scanner Centre received £800. Further donations of £50 were also made to the Alfreton Ladies Choir, the Dalesmen Male Voice Choir and the Belper Nursing Cup Charity Competition.
Councillor Bull said: “I’m delighted to have been able to support such worthwhile charities during my year as Mayor.
“I first became familiar with Derbyshire Association for the Blind through their attendance at civic dinners and I was immediately bowled over by those involved with the group, and the fantastic work they were doing.
“The Paul Strickland Scanner Centre is a specialist unit for patients from all over the country. While working as a taxi driver I’ve taken a lot of local people to the Centre for treatment, and I decided this would be a great opportunity to give something back to the charity from the people of Amber Valley.
“I was also pleased to be able to support a number of local organisations that I’d come into contact with through my civic duties.”
Alan McConville, Fundraising and Marketing Manager at Derbyshire Association for the Blind said “The money raised during Councillor Bull’s year in office will help provide services for blind and partially sighted people in Derbyshire. We provide services for 5,000 visually impaired people, and this money will allow us to continue a number of vital services. These include a presence in each of the six eye hospitals across the county, our telephone and home befriending service, our 24 hour helpline and the resource centres provided across Derbyshire, which includes our mobile centre to reach rural communities.”
