Your chance to get involved in Council decision making

27 September 2007

Local residents, voluntary groups and businesses are being encouraged to help influence and shape the decisions made by Amber Valley Borough Council through their local Scrutiny Committee.

The Scrutiny Committee is empowered to challenge cabinet decisions and review council policies. The scrutiny process is led by Borough Councillors, but with the recent introduction of public speaking at Scrutiny Committee meetings, members of the public can now call for matters to be reviewed.

The Scrutiny Committee at Amber Valley Borough Council has this month published its Annual Report for 2006/07, which outlines the various ways the public can get involved. The Report also outlines the issues the Committee chose to review during the last financial year and informs people about the issues it will be considering over the coming months.

During the year the Scrutiny Committee:

  • reviewed how domestic violence and anti-social behaviour were being tackled in the Borough;
  • scrutinised the Council’s budget, and examined performance in relation to expenditure;
  • looked at the policies and procedures in place to implement the smoke-free legislation.

Councillor Nigel Mills, Chairman of the Council’s Scrutiny Committee, said: “The role of the scrutiny committee at Amber Valley is to be a ‘critical friend’ of the Council, making suggestions designed to improve services for the community.

“Between now and June next year we’ll be looking at a host of issues that directly impact on those living and working within the Borough. These include street cleaning in residential areas, the legal powers of the Council to control fly tipping, local transport issues and management of our parks. Members of the public are welcome to request the Scrutiny Committee review a subject or matter of concern in the Borough. This can be done by discussing the matter with your local councillor or directly with a Committee member, or by contacting the Public Scrutiny Office.”

The Scrutiny Committee’s Annual Report can be viewed at the Council’s Headquarters in Ripley and at its Town Centre Offices in Alfreton, Belper, Heanor and Ripley. It can also be viewed on the Council’s website www.ambervalley.gov.uk
