Young athletes shine in local schools’ competition

24 October 2007

Teams from schools across the Borough are celebrating their success in the finals of Amber Valley Borough Council’s Primary School Sportshall Athletics Competition.

Twelve school teams competed in the Competition on 17th and 18th October. Each team had bounced, run and thrown its way to the final by winning one of the area heats of the competition in September. The finals, which took place at Alfreton Leisure Centre, involved three contests – the Large Schools’ Final, the Medium-sized Schools’ Final and the Small Schools’ Final.

The Large Schools’ Final saw Swanwick Primary School, Marlpool Primary School, Kilburn Junior School and Belper's Pottery Primary School competing for the annual shield. In a closely fought competition, Swanwick Primary School emerged as the winning school, improving on their third place finish in last year’s Final. Kilburn Junior took second place, Pottery Primary came third and Marlpool Junior took fourth place.

Taking the trophy in the Medium-sized Schools’ Final was Herbert Strutt Primary School, Belper, in what was their first appearance in the Finals. Last year’s runner-up, Breadsall Primary, had to be content with second place for another year. Christ the King Primary School from Alfreton came third and Waingroves Primary School finished in fourth place.

The Small Schools Final saw a reverse order finish from last year’s Final with Crich Carr Primary winning the annual shield from reigning champions Milford Primary School. Fritchley Primary School came in a close third and Morley Primary School in fourth place.

Amber Valley Deputy Mayor Councillor Jean Gemmill and Cabinet Member for Leisure Development, John Nelson, presented trophies to the winning teams.

The competition was supported by volunteer athletes and coaches from Amber Valley Athletic Club and youngsters from Amber Valley Borough Council’s Education 2 Employment training scheme.

Ends.
