Arson attack forces toilet closure

27 November 2007

Vandals have caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage after deliberately setting fire to the gents’ toilets in the Market Place at Heanor.

Amber Valley Borough Council has been forced to partially close the toilets following the incident, which took place on Sunday 25 November. As well as completely destroying one of the toilets, the fire caused considerable smoke damage to the surrounding units, and the entire cubicle was left flooded.

Councillor Jack Brown, Cabinet Member for Clean and Green at Amber Valley Borough Council said: “The sheer extent of the damage has left us with no other option but to partially close the gents’ toilet for the foreseeable future. Not only do we now have to find the money to repair and refurbish the toilets but, damage aside, this was an extremely irresponsible and dangerous act of vandalism that could have led to someone getting seriously injured. We will do all we can to fully re-open the toilets as soon as possible.”

Following a clean-up operation by the Council, the toilets are open, but with reduced facilities.

Police are investigating the incident. Anybody with any information, or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in Heanor Market Place on Sunday, is asked to contact Derbyshire police on 0845 123 333, quoting incident number 456.

Ends.
