Do you have garden waste that you aren’t able to compost? Would you prefer someone else to take it away for you? If your answer to these questions is yes, Amber Valley Borough Council can help.
From April 2008 the Council will offer residents a fortnightly garden waste collection service, using the same sized wheeled bins as those used for non-recyclable rubbish. The service, which will cover the whole of the Borough, will have an annual fee of £39.
Councillor Jack Brown, Cabinet Member for Clean and Green at Amber Valley Borough Council, said “We’ve decided to introduce the new garden waste collection service in direct response to requests from residents who have been asking the Council to collect garden waste. Although this new service isn’t coming into force until the spring, we’re asking residents to register their interest now to enable us to effectively plan ahead.
“It is better, environmentally, to home compost and we would always encourage residents to compost their garden waste wherever possible. However certain garden waste is more difficult to compost, and some residents would prefer someone else to help deal with this. We can do just that for 75 pence per week, or even less if neighbours club together and share a bin. Offering this on a subscription basis is a good way of providing the service for those residents who need it, without increasing the Council Tax burden for all.
“To date the Council has focused its money on improving recycling services for residents and this has been so successful that last year the Council collected more dry recyclables per head of population than any other council in the County - a total of 10,650 tonnes, compared with an average figure for the other district councils in Derbyshire of 5,109 tonnes. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the public for these great dry recycling figures.”
Residents are being asked to register an interest for the service now by contacting the Refuse and Recycling Helpline on 01773 841326.
You can also ring the Helpline if you would like advice on home composting or the home composting scheme.
