Miles Hilton-Barber has been granted the Freedom of the Borough of Amber Valley for his outstanding achievement of being the first blind man to fly a microlight from London to Sydney.
Mr Hilton-Barber, of Duffield, Derbyshire, entered the record books earlier this year after completing his 13,000 mile journey across 19 countries, which raised money to help eradicate preventable blindness in developing countries.
Councillor Alan Cox, Leader of Amber Valley Borough Council, said “Mr Hilton-Barber is a huge inspiration to others. We are delighted to present him with the Freedom of the Borough of Amber Valley, which is the highest award the Council can give someone for their achievements.”
At a Special Council Meeting on 31 October 2007, the Mayor of Amber Valley, Councillor Peter Arnold, officially presented Mr Hilton-Barber with the Freedom of the Borough in the form of a certificate and an engraved medal.
