The countdown to the opening of the new leisure centres in Ripley and Heanor is now underway.
The new Ripley Leisure Centre will open on 26 November followed by the William Gregg VC Leisure Centre in Heanor on 3 December.
Designed for people of all abilities and ages, both centres will house an extensive range of sports and leisure facilities, including new and refurbished sports halls, fitness facilities with over 50 pieces of equipment, exercise studios, new changing rooms and multi-purpose rooms for community use.
The final programme of certification testing on the construction work has meant that the new 25 metre main pools and smaller teaching pools at both centres will now open in Spring 2008, to coincide with the opening of the new Alfreton Leisure Centre.
To ensure people are not inconvenienced during the extended construction works, the existing pools at both Ripley and Heanor will remain open for public and club use.
Peter Carney, Chief Executive of the Council said “Both Amber Valley Borough Council and DC Leisure are committed to providing premium quality sport and leisure facilities for the residents of Amber Valley that will continue to benefit the community for many generations to come.”
“Whilst the delay to the opening of the new pools is extremely frustrating for all involved, it is vital that the building work is finished to the highest possible standards, and not compromised by the deadlines set at the outset of this project.
“We are absolutely committed to improving sport and leisure facilities in the Borough to help people lead a healthier, more active lifestyle, and for this reason we were not prepared to delay the opening of all the other fantastic facilities at the two new centres.
“We realise people will share our disappointment that the new pools are not opening at this time, however I am confident that any short term delays will certainly be outweighed by the longer term benefits these new facilities will offer the community.”
