Young athletes in Amber Valley are celebrating after triumphing yet again in the annual Norwich Union ‘Fun in Athletics’ Festival.
The event, which was held on 24 November at Grantham Meres Leisure Centre, saw the Amber Valley team of 30 boys and girls, aged 9 to 11 years, compete in a number of sportshall athletic events against seven other teams representing counties and districts from across the East Midlands.
The Amber Valley team won both the boys’ and the girls’ competitions, seeing off the Lincolnshire Imps team into second place.
Councillor John Nelson, Cabinet Member for Leisure Development at Amber Valley Borough Council said: “The Amber Valley team has an almost unbroken record of success over the past eight years of entering the East Midlands Final. The Borough has developed a fine tradition of producing talented teams and is an excellent example of strong working links between the Borough’s schools, Amber Valley Borough Council and Amber Valley Athletics Club.”
The Amber Valley team represents the Borough and is selected from local cluster competitions in September and October, involving over 700 children from around 40 local primary schools. The competition to select schools through to the final is organised by Amber Valley Borough Council’s Athletics Coordinator, with substantial assistance from volunteers and coaches from Amber Valley Athletic Club, and volunteers on the Sports Development Unit Leadership Development programmes.
Ends.
