Are you dreaming of a green Christmas?

11 December 2007

Amber Valley Borough Council is encouraging residents to get the New Year off to a green start by recycling their rubbish once the Christmas festivities are over.

Councillor Jack Brown MBE, Cabinet Member for Clean And Green at Amber Valley Borough Council, said: “We want to remind people that at this festive and busy time of the year there are plenty of opportunities for them to dispose of their rubbish in an environmentally friendly way. As well as the usual things such as recycling glass and plastic bottles, and composting their vegetable peelings, people can also recycle cards, wrapping paper* and other seasonal items.”

From 1 January 2008 people can recycle their real Christmas trees at all of Derbyshire’s Household Waste and Recycling Centres, including Taylor Lane, Loscoe, or at Shipley Garden Centre, Hassock Lane, North Shipley, Heanor. By diverting these trees away from landfill, we will reduce the amount of methane – a potent greenhouse gas – that is produced.

In the UK, approximately 2.5 billion Christmas cards will be thrown away this year. Residents can recycle their Christmas cards in their orange bag or they can be taken to WHSmith, Tesco, TKMaxx or Marks & Spencer’s for recycling. Funds raised through taking cards to any of these stores will be used by the Woodland Trust to plant and maintain woodlands throughout the UK. The Trust aims to collect 100 million cards nationally, which would plant 24,000 trees.

Ends.
