Local charity grants boost

Community groups and individuals in Belper and Milford are set to receive more than £2,800 from the Herbert Strutt Charity.

The Charity’s management committee agreed to award grants to seven organisations and two individuals at its meeting on Thursday 29 November 2006.

Councillor Alan Cox, Leader of Amber Valley Borough Council and chairman of the charity’s management committee, said: “Once again we are delighted to be able to award these grants, which will directly benefit those living in Belper and Milford.”

The charity made the following grants:

  • £!50 to Peter Robertson-Davies MBE to purchase a rotary petrol lawnmower to be used to maintain the lawns at Beaurepaire Garden, Belper.
  • £150 to the Whitemoor Amenity Fund to contribute towards an end deck for trampoline sessions for people with a learning disability.
  • £300 to Greg Townley, three times British Gymnastics Tumbling Champion, who has been selected to represent Great Britain at the World Tumbling Championships in Canada.
  • £400 to The Drop Inn to purchase a karaoke machine for use by young people using the centre.
  • £300 to the Drop In Coffee Morning (Bereavement) towards the ongoing costs of running the group.
  • £200 to Belper Thursday Club to cover the cost of guest speakers at meetings throughout the year.
  • £500 to Belper and District Neighbourhood Watch Support Group to purchase security-marking material to be used to protect equipment and property.
  • £400 to Fleet Arts and Herbert Strutt School towards a sculpture project to mark the transition of the school to its new site.
  • £483 to Belper and District Scouts to help cover the cost of travel insurance for the Scouts’ planned trip to the USA.

The Herbert Strutt Charitable Trust was established in 1986 and is administered jointly by Amber Valley Borough Council and Belper Town Council. The charity awards funds for charitable purposes to benefit residents of the area served by Belper Town Council (including Milford), in one or more of the following ways:

  • The relief of distress and sickness;
  • The provision and support, with the object of improving the condition of life for the residents of the area in the interests of social welfare of facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupation;
