The Midland Railway at Butterley is the place in Amber Valley which makes residents feel most proud, according to an online poll by Amber Valley Borough Council.
Amber Valley Borough Council took part in the ‘Pride of Place Poll’ by inviting visitors to click and vote for one of ten locally-nominated top spots on its website. Throughout November hundreds of people logged on to vote, and after the results had been counted the Midland Railway emerged as the clear winner. Heage Windmill and Shipley Country Park came in second and third spots
Twenty-one local authorities across the East Midlands took part in the Pride of Place poll by inviting visitors to vote on their websites. And not only was the Midland Railway the top spot in Amber Valley, it also polled the second highest number of votes in the region! Franklin Gardens in Northampton was the East Midlands winner.
Councillor Stephen Hayes, Deputy Leader of Amber Valley Borough Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Tourism, said: “We would like to thank everybody who took the time to log on to our website and vote for their favourite place in Amber Valley.
“We have a fantastic range of attractions across the borough, and that was clearly reflected in the fact that more people voted for places here in Amber Valley than anywhere else in Derbyshire! Our congratulations go to the Midland Railway for coming out as the top spot in Amber Valley!”
Alan Calladine, Midland Railway Trust Development Officer said " We’re delighted with the news, especially as this is the second major public vote in a week that we have won. The viewers of ITV Central East News voted for us to be awarded £80,000 from the National Lottery People’s Millions scheme to allow us to purchase an area of woodland and create paths and a footbridge. We are very grateful to everyone that took the trouble to vote for the Midland Railway Butterley in the Pride of Place Poll, and very proud of the support that we have received"
