Amber Valley Borough Council is officially leading the way in Derbyshire when it comes to recycling rates!
The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has recently published municipal waste statistics for all English local authorities in 2006/07. The figures reveal that Amber Valley has the best dry recycling percentage (25.64%), the lowest household waste per head of population (350kg) and the lowest cost of collection per head of population (£43.01) in Derbyshire. This means the Council is tenth, third and seventh respectively in these categories out of the 40 East Midlands authorities.
The Council is also second in the county with respect to both residual household waste per head of population (260kg) and the percentage of households that have two or more recyclable materials collected at kerbside (99.5%).
Jack Brown, Cabinet Member for Clean and Green at Amber Valley Borough Council, said: “The figures published by Defra demonstrate how Amber Valley Borough Council is actively contributing to national goals to reduce waste, recycle more and landfill less. Since these statistics were recorded we’ve continued to improve our recycling schemes, and increase the amount of waste we’re able to recycle.
“However we recognise that this couldn’t have been achieved without the commitment and positive participation of residents within the Borough. Their efforts to recycle and reuse have helped divert biogradable waste away from landfill and reduce the level of dangerous greenhouse gas emissions. We would like to thank them for all their support so far, and hope that together we can continue to increase the amount of waste products recycled in Amber Valley.”
