Play your part in maintaining Council standards

24 January 2008

Amber Valley Borough Council is looking for an enthusiastic and committed person with an interest in local government to become an independent member on its Standards Committee.

The Standards Committee consists of six Borough Councillors, a parish council representative and three independent members, and meets four evenings a year at Ripley Town Hall.

The Committee plays a key role in maintaining and promoting high standards of conduct by Borough and Parish Councillors. In particular, it monitors the operation of the Members’ Code of Conduct; and is responsible for investigating allegations that Councillors’ behaviour has fallen short of the required standard and conducting local hearings into alleged breaches of the Code.

The Council is now looking to increase its independent membership of the Standards Committee. The successful applicant will be appointed for four years. They will receive a small annual allowance, together with reimbursement of any expenses.

Independent members must not be a Councillor or a Council officer, nor should they be actively involved in local politics.
