Residents in Amber Valley are set to have one of the lowest borough council tax increases in Derbyshire.
At a meeting of the Full Council last night Members agreed a 3% increase in the Borough Council’s share of the council tax bill for 2008/09.
This represents an increase of £4.82 per year for Band D bills, from £143.88 to £148.20.However for properties within Bands A and B – which represent 60% of all properties within Amber Valley – the increase is just £2.88 and £3.36 per year respectively. This equates to a weekly increase of 5.5 pence for Band A properties and 6.5 pence for Band B properties.
Speaking after the meeting Councillor Stuart Bradford, Leader of Amber Valley Borough Council, said: “ We are committed to providing residents in Amber Valley with good value for money, and that means striking a balance between keeping any council tax increase to a minimum, while at the same time ensuring we maintain and improve the services we provide.
“Despite the disappointing settlement for Amber Valley from Central Government, our rise is the second lowest in the county and is well below the current Retail Price Index, the most widely recognised measure of inflation.”
Amber Valley Borough Council’s budget is used to provide a wide range of services for all residents within the Borough. These include:
- Waste collection and recycling
- Street cleaning
- Parks and open spaces
- Leisure centres
- Cemeteries
- Development and building control, including planning permission
- Local land charges
