Townscape Heritage Initiative recognised with national award

20 March 2008

The Belper and Milford Townscape Heritage Initiative has been recognised by the Civic Trust at its annual Awards ceremony for the positive impact the project has made in the area.

The Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI), which has transformed parts of Belper Town Centre and helped re-open the Ritz Cinema, was one of just 100 projects shortlisted for an award from over 400 entries.

The winners were announced at a gala dinner and ceremony in Newcastle upon Tyne. Francesca Machin, Amber Valley Borough Council’s THI Project Officer, Councillor Alan Cox, Chairman of the THI Steering Group, Councillor Peter Arnold, Member of the THI Steering Group and Derek Manley, Belper resident representative on the Steering Group attended the ceremony to collect the award.

The THI received a Mention from the Civic Trust. Mentions are given to projects that are of benefit culturally, socially or economically whilst making a recognised contribution to the quality and appearance of the environment.

Councillor Alan Cox, Chairman of the THI Steering Group said: “The acknowledgement of the Belper and Milford Townscape Heritage Initiative by the Civic Trust is a huge accolade and represents national recognition of the success of the Initiative. We are delighted that the hard work of everyone involved in these projects has been recognised in this way.”

Notes for editors

Amber Valley Borough Council coordinates the THI. It aims to regenerate key commercial sites within Belper’s Market Place and King Street as well as the former mill workers’ housing at Hopping Hill in Milford, and the Clusters in Belper. The THI offers grants to the owners of buildings to help them carry out building repairs, reinstate architectural detail and bring vacant floorspace back into use.
