Consultation begins on whole council elections

29 May 2008

Amber Valley Borough Council is considering a change in the way it elects its Councillors – and is inviting people to submit their views before any decision is reached.

At present one third of the Council is elected each year for three years out of four (15 wards, with 15 councillors up for election). Elections for Derbyshire County Council take place in the fourth year.

The Council is now considering proposals to introduce whole council elections every four years. This would mean that in 2011 all 45 members of the Council would be up for election. Elected councillors would remain in office for four years.

People are now being invited to submit comments and representations on the proposals. These will be presented at a Special Council meeting on a date to be arranged.

All information relating to whole council elections can be found on the Amber Valley Borough Council website www.ambervalley.gov.uk under the Democracy and Elections section of the A to Z. If anyone requires a paper copy of the documentation they should call 01773 841631. Copies are also available at the Town Centre Offices in Alfreton, Belper, Heanor and Ripley and in local libraries.

Any representations should be sent in writing to The Chief Executive, Amber Valley Borough Council, PO Box 15, Town Hall, Ripley, Derbyshire, DE5 3XE. The consultation period ends on 30 June.

Ends.
