A feasibility study to consider the potential future uses for the former Herbert Strutt School on Derby Road in Belper is now available.
The Belper and Milford Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) commissioned the study after the building was left vacant following the school’s move to a new site on Bargate Road.
Councillor Alan Cox, Chairman of the THI Steering Group said, “Amber Valley Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council are working together to find a practical solution for the building’s future that will honour Herbert Strutt’s wishes that it should benefit the people of Belper. The intention is that this will either be through finding new uses for the building that will directly benefit the local community, or through the sale of the building to raise funds for the Herbert Strutt Charity, which provides funds for charitable purposes for the general benefit of the residents of the area served by Belper Town Council.”
The feasibility study is now available on the Amber Valley Borough Council website at www.ambervalley.gov.uk Comments are invited on the options put forward in the study prior to its consideration by Amber Valley Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council. Both Councils will consider the study so that a joint decision on the future of the building can be made based on its findings.
Comments can be submitted via the form on the Amber Valley Borough Council website or directly to Francesca Machin, Townscape Heritage Initiative Project Officer at PO Box 18, Town Hall, Ripley, DE5 3SZ The closing date for submitting comments is 30 May 2008.
