Flying the flag for newly adopted park

23 May 2008

Children from Lons Infant School in Ripley helped celebrate the official raising of the Green Flag at Crossley Park in Ripley by planting a tree to mark their adoption of the Park.

Crossley Park received a Green Flag Award this year following an intensive scheme by Amber Valley Borough Council to improve the park for local residents. Green Flag Awards are the national standard for parks and green spaces, and Crossley Park was one of only 42 parks in the East Midlands to be honoured with an Award.

In April Lons Infant School approached Amber Valley Borough Council asking if they could officially adopt Crossley Park. They are currently looking to become an ‘Eco School’ and have already implemented many practices in the school to help them achieve this. The pupils attended the ceremony where the Green Flag was raised, and donated an oak tree, which was planted in the Park. The children have all had a go at designing a flower-bed; judging will take place later this month and the chosen design will then be planted in the Park.

Councillor Jack Brown, Cabinet Member for Cleaner, Greener and Safer at Amber Valley Borough Council said: “Over the past two years Council staff have been working with the Crossley Park Community Association to make many improvements to the Park in order to create a beautiful open space that everyone living and working in Ripley could visit and enjoy. We are pleased that not only have these improvements been recognised by a prestigious Green Flag Award, but also by the children of Lons Infant School. In view of their request Amber Valley Borough Council was delighted to present them with an official certificate of adoption to mark the raising of the Green Flag in Crossley Park.”

Notes for editors

During 2007 Amber Valley Borough Council carried out fundamental changes within Crossley Park, including:

  • A new play area, with new fencing
  • New signage welcoming visitors to the Park and a new notice board
  • New picnic benches
  • New bins
  • New planting in the flower beds

Partnership working between Amber Valley Borough Council, Crossley Park Community Association and Derbyshire Police has helped to see a marked decrease in anti-social behaviour within the Park.
