New leisure centre set to open in Alfreton

02 May 2008

Alfreton’s new state-of-the-art leisure centre is set to open its doors to the public on Monday 12 May 2008.

The Centre, which is owned by Amber Valley Borough Council and managed by DC Leisure Management Ltd, will provide an extensive range of recreation and leisure facilities, designed for people of all abilities and ages.

The brand new centre includes a spacious reception area, with a café serving a range of food and drinks, a six-court sports hall for activities including badminton and football, two glass-backed exhibition squash courts, a high-tech gym housing over 60 pieces of equipment, a workout studio, new changing rooms, a sauna and an indoor bowls facility with a licensed bar.

Anyone joining the gym at Alfreton will also be able to use the recently opened facilities at Ripley Leisure Centre and the William Gregg VC Leisure Centre at Heanor as part of the membership package.

Councillor John Nelson, Cabinet Member for Leisure Development at Amber Valley Borough Council said, “These superb new facilities are amongst the best in the Borough, if not the county! The people of Alfreton have been watching this impressive building take shape over the past few months, and now they will have the chance to see first hand the fantastic facilities it has to offer.

“The building of the new leisure centre represents a major investment in the health and wellbeing of everyone in the Borough, and we hope lots of people will be encouraged to come along and take part in the many sporting and leisure activities available.”

The final programme of certification testing on the construction work has meant that the new 25 metre, six lane competition standard main pool and separate teaching pool at Alfreton Leisure Centre will now open in early autumn, to coincide with the opening of the brand new pools at both Ripley and the William Gregg VC Leisure Centres. To ensure people are not inconvenienced during the extended construction works, the existing pools at Ripley and Heanor will remain open for public and club use until the new pools open.

Ends.

Notes for editors

Amber Valley Borough Council and DC Leisure Management Ltd are working in partnership to provide leisure centre services in Alfreton, Heanor and Ripley. In April 2006 Amber Valley Borough Council entered into a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) agreement with DC Leisure Management Ltd. Under the agreement, DC Leisure Management Ltd will transform the Council's leisure centres in Alfreton, Heanor and Ripley and manage them for up to 32 years. The project has attracted more than £15 million pounds worth of Private Finance Initiative (PFI) credits from Central Government. A PFI Initiative involves a public sector organisation entering into a partnership with a private sector organisation to deliver a service to higher standards and with greater investment than either could deliver individually. These partnerships are made possible through financial support from Central Government.

Further details confirming the dates for the opening of the swimming pools at all three sites will be published nearer the time.
