Wondrous Tales from Around the World

23 May 2008

The art of storytelling has held children spellbound for generations and if you and your family want to hear a wondrous tale or two then head for Shipley Country Park.

‘Wondrous Tales From Around The World’ is a festival of storytelling for all the family. The event is free and is being organised by the Arts Development Team at Amber Valley Borough Council in conjunction with Derbyshire County Council. It takes place at the Shipley Country Park Visitor Centre near Heanor on the weekend of 7th and 8th of June from 1.00pm until 5.00pm.

Councillor Norman Bull, Cabinet Member for Well-Being at Amber Valley Borough Council said: “This promises to be a great weekend for all the family to enjoy, with plenty of activities taking place for children of all ages and reading abilities. We hope lots of people will come along to listen to the tales of magic and mystery from different cultures around the world, meet the storytellers and maybe even have a go at writing their own poetry and stories.”

On Sunday Derbyshire’s current Poet Laureate River Wolton and former Poet Laureate Cathy Grindrod will be running a poetry workshop and encouraging people to get creative by putting pen to paper and writing their own poems.

Derbyshire storyteller Jerry Hanifin will be joining us on the Sunday to perform mimed stories for deaf children. These will also have spoken interpretation for hearing children. A number of stories throughout the weekend will be signed using British Sign Language for deaf and hearing impaired children.

On Saturday local dance group Folk Friendzy will be performing and there will be children's activities, face painting and bookstalls.

Ends.
